-Went over the format of their TEST on Monday (Chapter 1 - Early Middle Ages) so they know what to expect.
-Gave students a chance to ask questions from their review sheet for the test.
-Played various review games using words and concepts from Chapter 1 - "Pictionary", and "Password".  Students played these games in groups of 4.  Some students chose to study on their own instead.
-Handed back "Spread of Christianity" assignment and "Early Middle Ages Timeline".
-Finished off with some Canadian Trivia.

-Students handed in Timelines of Early Middle Ages
-Then spent time on the worksheet relating to the Franks, Anglo-Saxons, Celts and Vikings - went over as a class.
-Review sheet for the Chapter 1 TEST - Monday Oct 3 - Vocabulary words and questions relating to all of the material we have covered during this chapter.
-Students watched several short youtube videos - "Crash Course in World History" - Christianity, End of the Roman Empire, Islam, Vikings - as a method of review for the test.

Sorry, I wasn't there guys - I'm taking part in a professional development workshop called "Safeteen" - will tell you what it's all about at some point - pretty interesting and helpful stuff!

-Students continued working on their timelines of the Early Middle Ages.  Timelines need to have events glued on, a picture drawn to represent each event and coloured.  If not completed in class - assigned as homework - DUE:  Wednesday Sept. 28.
-Worksheet on the Franks, Anglo-Saxons, Celts and Vikings to work on - not due for homework.

-Upcoming Chapter 1 TEST - Monday October 3

-Completed the movie, "The Dark Ages" - finished questions and discussed as a class
-Students began to work on timelines of the Early Middle Ages - will complete in class next day
-No assignments due for homework but I do strongly encourage everyone to read the rest of
Chapter 1 - The Early Middle Ages in their textbook.

-As a class we went over the Religion chart
-Students were given time to complete the "Spread of Christianity" questions.  We went over #1-4.  Students handed in their answers to #5c and #6.
-Watched the documentary - "The Dark Ages" and answered questions on a handout

1.  Paragraphs handed in, quizzes handed back
2.  Review from last day - religion and purposes of religion in a society
3.  Religion Chart - students were asked to find information on Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
        - due Wednesday Sept 21 if not completed in class.
4.  Students then used pages 15-20 of their textbook to complete questions on the "Spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe".  Questions 1-4 are due for Wednesday Sept 21.
5. Finished off with Canadian trivia.

1.  Students wrote "European Map Quiz".
2.  Reviewed what we learned about last day
              - Fall of the Roman Empire and the consequences of that on Western European civilization
              -Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
3.  Students then wrote a paragraph that outlined what they thought it is going to take for Western Europe to get back to the level of civilization that existed during the Roman Empire.
            -students were given time to work on their paragraph during class - due: Sept 20
4.  As a class we discussed what might help W. Europe become more civilized.  One common answer was rules, laws and someone to enforce these - lead to the topic of "religion".  
        -we defined religion
        -we discussed the purposes of religion within a society
        -the three main religions found in Europe during the time period we will be studying - 
         Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
5.  We finished off with Canadian trivia.

1.  European maps were handed back after being marked.
2.  Homework Check - and went over Roman Empire questions as a class
3.  Open book Roman Emperor quiz
4.  Discussed the fall of the Roman Empire and the changes that occurred in Western Europe as a result.
5.  Watched, "Lean on Me" movie clip and compared it to the Fall of the Roman Empire.
6.  Introduced Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - talked about how this theory could relate to society's needs before the Fall and After.  Related it to the movie as well.

-Students worked in the IT Lab, using two different websites (lizard point.com and sheppardssoftware.com) to study Western European countries and their capitals in preparation for their QUIZ on Monday September 19th.

-As much of what we study this year will be European history, students were given a map of Europe and asked to label and colour Western European countries and their capitals.

-Each person presented their "story" in a small group

-The idea of "Historical Perspective" was introduced

  • What is perspective?
  • We looked at how it is possible to see events from different perspectives and how this might relate to history.
  • In order to understand the people and events of the past, we have to understand what was important AT THAT TIME in terms of common opinions, values and beliefs
  • When we view the past through our "present' lens - this is called "presentism".
